Day 24 (May 19, 2021)

Written on May 19th 2021 at 6:00 AM

Bonito Zuni Alt 3.8 to Grants (end of blue line alternate, 21 miles)

Despite the rain not lasting for long last nighr, the tent was still wet this morning. I wiped down what I could and rolled it up. Normally, I would plan on getting the tent out during a break to dry it out, but since this was a town day I cowboy pulses wait until I got to my hotel room to do it.

Not much to say about the hike itself today. Most was on well maintained dirt roads that followed two canyons into Grants, approaching Grants from the west. The scenery was good, but I had my mind at on town stuff as well. There was a water source along the way, which reduced the amount of water I needed to carry. Between that and the food I had eaten, my pack was light.

There was some traffic on the roads, including one gentleman who stopped to offer a ride or water if I needed it. (Again, some good people in this world.)

The first road eventually gave way to paved road approaching town. Grants is very spread out. The bad news was that the hotel I wanted to stay at was a long walk from the west side of town. The good news is that I would be walking by the Pist Office. I needed to mail a couple of things home, so at least I could take care of that.

Grants is part of historic Highway 66, which is the Main Street through town. There are some attempts a playing on that theme, but many businesses are closed on the way.

My hotel is tight next to a Wal Mart and Denny’s; what more could a hiker want!
