4/26/21 Nice weather hiking wasn’t particularly difficult but ran out of food last few miles and felt weak. No real inspiring views. Bummed some bars from a compassionate pair of hikers but that lasted until last 0.8 miles going into Damascus Virginia. Walked into town and no convenience store just a machine that I had difficulty getting to work with credit card. Walked 1/2 mile to the beautiful Dancing Bear place where I had a room. Got some food in the package Michele sent with Piper’s food and collapsed. Left Tennessee for good

Started out badly really after yesterday wanted to quit. Gave my disgusting wet smelly clothes to the owner and she washed them and gave me sweats to wear and the morning got clean clothes. Thanks to Michele and Joan for clearing my head. Beautiful day and Damascus is a true trail town everything geared towards it as the trail goes thru the center of town. Saw people I have met in the past and people recognized Piper. I really don’t think I could live with myself if I quit just need to plan better. More food so will continue on and today was a true zero day. Resupplied still need more food get an early start and head out for 5 days with better outlook. Booked a place in Marion Virginia in 60 miles. Going by Mount Rogers highest point in Virginia that I visited with my brother probably close to 40 years ago. Did the usual brushing Piper’s teeth, applying Mushers Secret Paw Wax and combed her fur so she doesn’t get knots. Put an skin lubricant where her pack could rub beneath her front legs. I do this everyday and today I trimmed her fur. She is a real trooper with all this. I trimmed her nails which is a real struggle she hates it. I don’t hurt her never cut the quick but it’s so difficult. That’s the only problem I ever have but I need to keep them short so she doesn’t tear the tent. Fortunately that’s only every few weeks.
