March 7, 2021: Training Update

Written on Mar 7th 2021 at 1:22 PM

Quick pat-on-my- back: I did 14 miles of real trail with my pack yesterday. This was my first time at that distance since shortly after Thanksgiving last year. On that attempt I injured the muscle in my left shin (and the right side was hurting). That led to a couple of doctor visits and then physical therapy. The good news is that I have learned how to strengthen my lower legs and the 14 miles felt good! A little soreness, but nothing a few stretches couldn’t handle. Yeah! And it was a perfect day to hike.

Yes, I know 14 miles isn’t a whole lot compared to the mileage I will need on the CDT. But I believe my PT (thank you Justin) and subsequent more structured training (thanks to my oldest son) is leading to more healthy results. My training plan has my ‘big miles’ day on Saturday. Next week: 16 miles.

(Trail was multiple times around a 3.4 mile loop trail at Woolly Hollow State Park in Arkansas.)
