We had quite a hard time hitching into town but were finally able to get a ride. We spent some time at the Amish store and downed a half gallon of delicious, locally made ice cream. There is a food lion in town but we were able to have someone give us a ride. Not sure how easy it would be to walk to.
Instead of Buena Vista go another 8 miles to Lexington, VA. It is an incredible town with an outfitter and running store for shoes if you need them. Lex Running Shop is awesome and the owners are incredibly knowledgeable on trail shoes. Plenty of restaurants and lodging as well. One of our favorite towns on the AT thus far.
I have fond memories of this place, but that is mainly because of the people we were with. Hitching was deemed impossible after over an hour of trying. We called a taxi and luckily it was cheap. We stopped by for Mexican food and walked to the pavilion, where you can set up your tent or cowboy camp for free. They gave a free ice cream cone to every thru hiker. Town seemed poor without many options.. luckily we didn't need to resupply because I didn't see many options for that.
