August 7, 2024 - Day 82

Written on Aug 8th 2024 at 4:37 AM

It was a 31 mile day today so this post will be a bit shorter. Tired body, tired mind.

We hiked with Berry, Bastien, Jordan, Devin, and Tiber today through an Oregon green tunnel of forest for most of the day. It was flat with longer water carries than were used to. I’ve been listening to the One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest audio book which just so happens to take place in Oregon. A little coincidence although I don’t know how fun this one is. Either way, it’s kept my mind a bit occupied during some long flat stretches of similar scenery.

We had a nice siting of some baby black bear cubs that scurried away to mama bear. It was then a long walk to South Brown Mountain Shelter. Built in the 90’s, it’s designed for use by the cross country skiing that takes place in the area during the winter. The Swedish notch construction seems to be an ommage to the sport. They even had a well to pump water out.

We then kept pushing through what was beautiful volcanic terrain that took a lot of getting used to when walking over these small yet annoyingly still big enough rocks that make your feet want to scream at the end of such a long day.

We’re camped next to Cascade River listening to what would be the perfect white noise of running water if it weren’t for the occasional car that drives by on the nearby road. Either way, we’re stoked to be camping next to water after such a long water carry.

Happy Trails…
