July 28, 2024 - Day 72

Written on Jul 31st 2024 at 4:35 AM

Waking up with a town day on your mind definitely picks up your pace. We got up also knowing that we had a car waiting for us. The morning itself was fairly uneventful. Mackenzie and I were both exhausted and ready for some rest. We kept our heads down and pushed for 24 miles to Baker Pass. Once we got to the pass, it was a quick ride into Tahoe City which if you’ve been to both Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe, one is definitely more exciting than the other.

It’s Rummages birthday tomorrow so we’re celebrating a bit tonight as she plans on driving around with friends off the PCT. I’m not sure what her job was but she worked in the Tahoe area for some time.

Spoons, Fly Lord, Mackenzie, Sonic and I all got an AirBnb in town for the next two nights. Looking forward to the rest and relaxation. Olympics binge watch.

Go USA…

July 29, 2024 - Day 73

Today, we slept in until 10:30 AM. It was glorious and much needed. The only real plans are breakfast, gear store, grocery store, and Olympics. After a sit down breakfast, we wandered back to our AirBnb and laid out for several hours before heading to the gear store. I grabbed a new pot and sun hoodie. Out with the old in with the new. There are two massive holes in my old sun hoodie from the rubbing of my straps. My shoulders are going to thank me. I was also able to use pieces of the sun hoodie to patch over some holes in my shorts. They’re getting comically battered.

The rest of the evening was spent enjoying pizza and watching the Olympics. Such a needed zero…

Happy resting…

July 30, 2024 - Day 74

We didn’t sleep in much as we had a 20 mile day planned today. Getting to trail always takes longer than expected so we were up and moving around about 7:30 this morning. After packing all of our stuff up, Fly Lord, Mackenzie, and I headed to the post office to mail some stuff home and bounce some items up the trail. Our packs are feeling so much lighter now which was a massive morale booster.

We grabbed some coffees from a nearby shop and after our fill of caffeine and bagels, got the only Uber XL in Tahoe City. It took us right to the trail head and made getting a hitch not necessary. Must have saved us over an hour.

Once on trail, we were greeted with trail magic from a hiker that goes by Painter. Watermelon and frozen snickers ice cream. We met a Tahoe Rim Trail hiker and a fellow PCT hiker.

The hiking was fairly easy and the miles went by quickly. The views of Lake Tahoe were magnificent and the blue of the water offered a wonderful contrast to the vibrant green moss that dresses the trees. Once up to the ridgeline, we had a 360 view of the area and noticed we were approaching Squaw Valley ski resort. The mountains surrounding the resort were beautiful and we watched the sunset behind frozen ski lifts. Weird to think people will be skiing in the spot we were hiking in a couple months.

Tomorrow, we hit truckee to ship off our bear cans and grab a resupply. Spoons’s mom will be joining us as well.

Also, Mackenzie got a new sun hoodie and sun glasses that makes her look like she’s wearing Frozones super suit. For now, we’ll call her frozone.

Happy trails…
