Day 64 - Truckee
Written on Jun 29th 2022 at 2:14 PM
Took a nearo today to enjoy Truckee! Tough hitch from the Donner ski ranch due to the highway to Truckee being closed, but we found a really rad climber/snowboarder who passed on the good karma he’s received who took us straight to an outfitter in town! Both of us got new shoes, as well as a couple other needed items, resupplied, and then walked into Old Town Truckee for beers.
We went to a brewery that we had visited before on our drive out from Denver. The bartender hiked the PCT in 2019 and bought us beers! Then ten hikers came in and we all sat on the floor because apparently we’re not used to right angles anymore.
Stayed at a hostel, ate at an old school diner, waiter paid for our sodas. We like Truckee.
Day 65

Had breakfast at Squeeze In per the recommendation of Dave, our hitch from yesterday. We ran into Vulture at the hostel, and he joined us, followed by Eager Beaver, Food Bag, and their trail angel President. President offered us a hitch back to trail which was unbelievably helpful! And we found out he’s a rad triple crowner who lives in SF and fights for tenant rights.
Got to trail at 11:45 and set out to make it 20 miles in (woof). We made it four miles to the Highway 80 underpass, and had to get our brand new shoes soggy wet in knee deep tunnel water.
Three miles later, we made it to the Peter Grub Hut! This was probably my 4th time there, having snowshoed and backpacked to this spot multiple times in my school backpacking career.
We pushed another 14 miles for 21 today! Not bad for a single afternoon. Tomorrow we will stop briefly in Sierra City for a burger (probably) then begin the dreaded 8 mile climb back up to alpine meadows.
