Day 13

Written on Mar 7th 2022 at 5:34 PM

I woke up really early listening to the howling of the wind. It was frightening listening to the wind roaring from a distance and hear it getting closer and closer to your tiny tent until all of a sudden it seems to fade away. The spot I camped might have been a bit slanted but it was protected from the angry wind. I had camp packed up and on my back before the sun could come up. The first climb of the day was Kelly Knob and it had to have been the most intense, constantly steep climb I’ve done yet. I would have to stop to catch my breath but would turn around while I rested just so my feet could point downwards instead of constantly upwards. With the knowledge that a thunderstorm is on the way, I’m glad I was able to get a shuttle ride into Hiawassee and get a hotel room. Cost me $20. While waiting, I had two past thru hikers offer to give me a ride for free. I love the kindness on this trail. Still, I had a shuttle driver on the way and it’s just not right to leave and stiff a shuttle driver. I know it happens and it’s just wrong. This hotel is struggling with only one house keeper so I have no idea when my room will be available. While waiting, I went to the Huddle House again for food and stopped at Ingles for food and drink for tonight and tomorrow since I’ll now spend a whole zero at Around the Bend hostel. As soon as I get back on trail, I should be entering NC and once the rain passes, I’ll hit my next challenge, low temps down to 20 degrees. The adventure continues.
