Day 75

Written on Jun 27th 2021 at 7:00 AM

June 27 PCT Mile 1210 - 1233.4 23.4 PCT miles

Started hiking early and knew we had only a few reliable water sources available and temperatures reaching 100+ today, so we had to cover miles early. We entered the burn zone (Quincy 2020 fire). Met Ribs and Tiny Pack, who indeed has a very TINY pack. It’s the first thing we said to him - perfect trail name.

Our last water source of the day involved a road walk and climbing down an embankment to a little creek/culvert below an overpass. Area was exposed and not much shade. We decided to eat dinner early near the water source and hike further along the trail to look for a tent site. Dinner spot was not pretty, but we found a spot of shade behind a dead tree and — there was water.

The road does not see much traffic and we saw a sign to Quincy only 26 miles away! Tempting to take that hike to get out of the heat. Little did we know we would be there in a couple of days!
We hiked a few more miles after we ate to get as far away from the road as we could manage. The clearing of fire damaged trees really has chewed up the trail and surrounding area.

We reached a trail journal and saw that Viking and Sunrise are three days ahead of us. Sadly, we will not catch up to them in this heat.

We found an area big enough for the tent after we did some ground clearing. Plan to get up at 4:00 in the morning because we have a long day and long hike up in hot weather to reach water and hopefully a tent site with a view, per guthook. Carrying extra water in AM.
