Day 59
June 10, 2021 PCT Mile 1002.5 to 1016.9 (Sonora Pass) the “Don’t Look Down Day”
PCT miles today - 14.4
Snowy morning. Up over gorgeous Sonora pass - no falls or slips - both in one piece. Saw Grandpa eating along a snow bank with 2000 foot drop below him.
Hard sections covered in snow - “don’t look down day” . The footprints of other hikers through the steep snow sections made it much easier, but still required concentration due to long, long snow drop offs. All good if you just don’t look and stay forcused. Chris used crampons. Rick didn’t need them.
There did not seem to ever be a single slot or saddle that one could call Sonora Pass. We think the pass is actually where the cars drive over. Don’t know. When we made it to over “the pass” to Hwy 108 we met Megan and Mike who gave us a ride to Kennedy Meadows North. Very nice couple from Santa Barbara who are planning to hike PCT in a few years. Daughter is at school at UCSC (Santa Cruz). Wild - Said they met Stilts in Mammoth yesterday and gave him a ride. Weird coincidence.
Kennedy Meadows North is huge and packed!!! Opposite of Kennedy Meadows South. Family and dogs everywhere. We lucked out and got in a cabin with Bounce, Nips and Cruise Control. Lovely place with hot showers!!! Met up with Blue again who was entertaining the masses. Counted at least 24 pack horses all saddled up for day trips.
