Day 55

June 6, 2021 PCT Mile 927.4 to 942.5 (Tuolumne)

PCT miles today - 15.1

Hiked over Donahue Pass - no one was around, so no autographs requested. Snow covered much of the trail, which resulted in a slow descent as we picked our way through the boulders while checking Guthook. Gorgeous views into Tuolomne and Lyell canyon. The Tuolomne river water was so clear Rick kept stopping looking for fish, but didn’t see any.

The 10+ mile hike along the river was gorgeous, but seemed to take forever (!) perhaps because we knew some ‘real food’ was waiting in the other end. We finally made it to the Tuolomne campground, store and small ‘restaurant’. The campground is currently closed for car campers, but backcountry hikers with permits are allowed to stay. Strange to see it completely empty. No other hikers were there. Huge area. We selected a secluded site close to the river, set up the tent, put food in lockers (Bear proof) and headed for hamburgers - mediocre at best, but excellent soft serve ice cream!. Saw Hot Toddy and got the scoop on the backpackers section of campground. He also said that Sonora Pass (3-4 days ahead) is still covered in snow and can be sketchy. We saw a lot of PCT hikers buying expensive food for resupply, but we didn’t know anyone. We located a place to charge phones (by the Kiosk) and returned to the tent with full bellies. Nice sleep!
