Day 1…
Devin and I got up around 5:15 this morning to get an early start on what we thought was going to be a 3 mile walk from our AirBnB to the Southern Terminus. Around 5:50 we were out the door and within 10 meters of leaving the neighborhood, a guy by the name of Joseph, a.k.a Speeds, and his son Noah stopped their truck thinking we were lost PCT hikers. After telling him we were headed to the Southern Terminus, they told us to hop in and gave us a ride to the monument. Saved us about an hour of walking and gave us a big boost of energy to start.
After taking photos at the terminus, signing the guestbook, and sticking our hands through the Southern border, we took our first steps on the trail. About .75 miles in, we stopped by camp Lockett, a campsite for PCT hikers to spend the evening before starting their hike. It’s a pretty cool spot with space heaters, keurig, grittle, and a big PCT Class of 2024 banner. We signed the banner and a guy by the name of ‘Papa Bear’ greeted us and graciously cooked us some pancakes and offered us some coffee. The guy was a character. He lives in his trailer with his girlfriend and shared some awesome stories. The guy has never used a water filter in his life and has hiked the PCT multiple times.
We got moving and saw our first PCT mile marker and we’re feeling the love of the trail. About mile 6, we ran up on our first rattlesnake. We were on high alert the rest of the day. It was a solid 5 footer. Beautiful…
After a solid 15.5 mile day, we decided to set up camp early, get some rest and hit the day early tomorrow morning. Hoping to get some good rest and get the hiker legs in check.
Happy trails…
Aka speeds!!!!
Phew, 15.5 miles the first day is impressive! Y’all were booking it! That guy sounds like he was awesome to be around, his immune system sounds like it’s a beast, having never used filters… Wild
