Day 173

Day 173

Last Call Aug 14th, 2022
Last Call's 2022 AT Thru-Hike

I love a town day. Since I had a whole group of people show up at camp last night around 9pm (there were 4 tents in the morning that weren’t there when I went to bed) that all decided to be very loud setting up their tents and flashing their white beams from their headlamps everywhere, I had no problem with whatever noise I made this morning at 5am when I packed up and headed out. (I know. Give me a Snickers because I’m turning into a Diva.) The hike over the Baldpates were tough but beautiful. Maine is not disappointing in the scenery department. As soon as we reached East B Hill Road where we were to meet our shuttle to take us to Pine Ellis Hiker Hostel, there were trail angels there where I had enough time to drink a soda and then the guy gave me a beer right when my shuttle showed up. No problem. I know how to chug a beer. LOL! It was a brown ale from New Hampshire and now I cannot remember the brewery. Anyway, I arrived at Pine Ellis and, uh, okay. Old house. We’ll see what it looks like. I see signs to keep packs off the porch and to take shoes off. We then walk in the house and a Native Indian man walks up to us and asks us what we want. I tell him we’re here to check in. He says, “Why didn’t you ring the bell? Go back out and ring the bell.” We walk back out of the house, see the button for “the bell” and hit the button. That’s when the guy opens the door back up and says, “Now you can come in.” We walk in and one of the ladies who runs the place comes out of a private room to check us in and then have the guy show us where the laundry is, the bathroom and the bunkhouse. I took a top bunk as one of the only people tonight I think is capable of lifting myself up into the bunk as there’s not really a ladder to get up here. It’s really dirty in here and even my blanket on the bed had 5 dead dried up beetles in it. (Needless to say I’m not using it and I’m sleeping in my own quilt. Sparkle and I already booked this place for tonight and tomorrow so we’ll make it work but this is the worst place I’ve stayed at yet. There’s confusion of when we’re getting a shuttle out tomorrow. It could be at our requested 6am or at the 8am regular time listed on the sheet but then the lady told another hiker it would be at 9am. Who knows now! As long as we get our shuttle back to East B Hill Road so we can hike 10.1 miles to South Arm Road we will get a shuttle back to this lovely place. There’s only one single “market” in town that has a grill to order food so we’ll be hitting that again tomorrow for dinner and grab something like a honey bun for breakfast the next day and get out of here.
