Day 169

Day 169

Last Call Aug 10th, 2022
Last Call's 2022 AT Thru-Hike

Pretty interesting day today. I hit the 1,900 mile mark so I’m excited about that. After that, the trail went to crap. It doesn’t look like this section of trail from NH Route 2 to apparently the Maine border has had any trail maintenance done in a long time. There’s barely ANY white blazes anywhere letting you know you’re still on the right trail. There are a ton of blowdown trees across the trail. It’s also extremely overgrown in places so you can barely even tell that it’s still the trail. Maybe the AMC needs to take all that money they charge all the hikers for and put it into maintaining this area. Anyway, I got to Gentian Pond Shelter (had to laugh at the donation box mounted on a tree) and all the tent platforms and overflow area are full of tents already. I found out it is a survey crew working out here doing land surveys. Really? You think it was a good idea to come out here and do that now while the whole AT thru-hiker bubble is coming through? I was able to find a spot deeper into the trees to set up my tent. There’s a lot of bumpy roots under my tent but at least my sleeping pad keeps me from feeling those. I’m tilted at a strange angle but it’s as good as it’s going to get. I found wads of wetted toilet paper right next to where I put my tent so that explains why I smell crap. What is wrong with people? There’s a privy here! Use it! If you’re going to do your business in the woods then dig a proper cat hole and fully bury that crap… literally! I think I need a Snickers. I’m getting bitchy. I’m just ready for this journey to be over. I’m tired physically and mentally. The good news is I’m a few miles away from the New Hampshire - Maine border so I’ll be in my 14th and final State in the morning. I expect to get emotional. It’s a big deal not only for going into my last State but I will be walking into my new home State since we now have an apartment waiting on me in South Portland. It still amazes me I’ve walked here from Georgia. I’m so close to the end! It’s almost over. Then I can give my feet a much needed rest.
