Day 84

Day 84

Last Call May 17th, 2022
Last Call's 2022 AT Thru-Hike

This is a short day in mileage; only 12.5 miles planned. That said, it starts with me at elevation 939 and climbing up Three Ridges to an elevation of 3,965. Wilson, with his most well behaved dog, Brownie, hiked with me and liked my plan of 12.5 today and tomorrow to line up a nero on Thursday. It was great to have someone to chat with while doing this massive climb because it kept my mind off of it and we were at the summit before we knew it. There some really big boulder scrambles today. I loved the water source where water was bubbling right out of the ground below a tree raised up above it. So cool, I had to get a pic. At an earlier water source, Brownie gave me some lovin’ when I went to take our pictures. Such a sweet dog! Brownie and Wilson are only hiking into Shenandoah National Park and finishing after that. I wish them both the best and it was a pleasure to meet them both. Wilson and I were kind of freaking out when we got to where we wanted to camp. The comments saying it’s a good spot for a couple tents were a joke! It was all rock, surrounded by poison ivy and a nasty dead tree half leaning on another tree. We both agreed it wasn’t a safe place to camp so we pushed another 1.7 to Rock Point where, again, the comments on the guide said room for 2-3 tents. It’s right at an overlooks with amazing views but the ground is all rocky. Wilson has his tent literally pitched behind a boulder larger than his tent. I’m a little less than 100 ft from the cliff edge but I have trees on this cliff. It’s amazing having the setting sun at the same height as me in my tent. I headed back over to the overlook and watched the most amazing sunset I’ve ever seen. Breathtaking gets close to describing it. It’s the windiest, rockiest section I’ve ever tented but what I saw tonight made it ALL worth it. Also, since we pushed on an extra 1.7 miles, I now have only a 10.8 mile to get me to the shelter and set me up for a nero into Waynesboro the following day.
