So today didn’t go as planned and that’s kind of a good thing. When I woke up, I drank my instant breakfast with an instant coffee packet in my water bottle. I didn’t have anything food wise left for breakfast. I also fully drained both battery banks. I needed to recharge and resupply food. My original plan was to have a 2-ish mile to the road that takes me down into Montebello Campground & General Store, which would be 2 extra non-AT miles. I planned to pay for a campsite there so I could also shower. Then I would head the 2 miles back to trail and continue on tomorrow. Well, I did go down to the General Store. Cute place and ladies there were very friendly. I resupplied enough to get to Waynesboro on Thursday and then sat on their patio charging one of my battery banks and my phone. It was one of the most expensive resupplies yet! Prices were ridiculous but I now had no choice. There was no cell service or wifi and a tent spot would cost $17.50. (That’s actually 50% off for hiker rate. Wha?!) So after spending $77+ dollars for a simple 2 1/4 days resupply and charged my battery, I hiked back 2 miles to the trail. I decided I’d hike the next big climb up to Priest Shelter. I got there at 4pm. There was no one there but there are signs that the privy is over full and a hazard to the surrounding area so I said, screw that! I figured I could push another 4+ miles and after The Priest, it was all downhill to the Tye River where there were a bunch of campsites. I got down there about 6pm to find a few soda cans sitting on the suspension walkway. Trail Magic! I grabbed one of the Mountain Dew cans and after pitching my tent, I went and stuck the soda can in the river between some rocks. By the time I had dinner ready, that soda was cold. Yeah, i have to pack out a soda can but it is worth it. I enjoyed soaking my feet in the river and hanging out on a very big rock that’s like an oversized couch.
