Day 46

Day 46

Chris-and-Rick May 29th, 2021
Chris-and-Rick's 2021 PCT Thru-Hike

May 29. 790 Kearsage Pass to Onion Valley Trailhead.

Another day of gorgeous views and wildly unexpected experiences. The storm predicted for the 30th started rolling in in the 29th, so glad to exit a day ahead of schedule.

First - Chris woke with a nasty cough and feeling pretty lousy. Good thing we are headed into Independence. No AT&T or Verizon service so no way to know if there is room at the Inn. Fingers crossed.

Hot Toddy (trail name origin: needed clothes on the AT and there was only a thrift store. He found only one pair of pants that fit, but with the words ‘Hot Toddy’ stenciled across the backside) hiked with us for much of the way over Kearsage and past several lovely mountain lakes. Saw a few fly fishermen at a couple of lakes.

As we neared the trailhead parking lot visible below us a man approached with a great deal of heavy equipment and asked if we were thru-hikers and if he could take our picture. Chris said she looks terrible (eyes swollen) and disheveled and coughing. He said PERFECT. For some crazy reason she agreed. Now regretting it! He had a big, heavy light diffuser/umbrella that he asked Rick to hold. He instructed Chris to take off sunglasses and think about being disappointed by one of her children. Honestly! She was feeling so sick she just did everything he told her to do. No doubt these are the worst pictures of her ever - he took at least half a dozen. She didn’t want to see photos and said she didn’t want a copy. He took a couple of pictures of Rick too, who looked just fine. How could you predict that?

We met Hot Toddy and his parents as they were coming back up the trail for a short day hike.

When arrived mid-morning at the trailhead parking and had a bar or two of AT&T Service Chris called the Inn and our reservation was moved -yeah! We hitched the 12 miles into Independence and went to Port of Subs for food and to wait for our room. While we were there Clydesdale was dropped off and he said he had reservations at Williamson Inn for the next night, but wanted off the mountain before the storm. Chris suggested he call to see if reservation could be moved, but no luck. He camped at a nearby campsite and came to breakfast the next day.
