Day 31 (May 26, 2021)

Day 31 (May 26, 2021)

Shawn Bryan May 26th, 2021
Shawn Bryan's 2021 CDT Thru-Hike

Zero in Cuba, NM

Another typical zero day.

  • Big breakfast in a local cafe.
  • Laundry. The owner of the laundromat is very friendly.
  • Plan next leg. The big decision here is the next resupply point. Before COVID, the typical thing to do was take what is called the Ghost Ranch alternate along the way and have a resupply box sent there, then continue to Cumbres Pass (slightly into Colorado) which is close to Chama, NM. That splits up a 150 leg nicely. However, due to COVID, Ghost Ranch was not allowing resupply boxes. So now the choice was whether to resupply for all 150 miles (7 days for me) or plan to hitchhike at Highway 84 north into Chama at about the 60 mile point. Seven days of food is a lot (about 14 pounds) and I am not confident enough yet for that distance all at once, so I elected the Highway 84 option.
  • All the other in town chores
  • I saw several other hikers in town and we talked.
  • Honestly got bored later in the day and wished I had hiked out about noon.
  • Saw a Facebook post that Ghost Ranch had just opened up to allow resupply boxes and hikers to come through. Unfortunately, this happened as the post office was closing so I didn’t have enough time to get a resupply box set up. Oh well. I was also looking forward to the main CDT route before Highway 84 based on other hiker comments and wanted to get hiking again the next morning.
  • Lots of eating throughout the day.
