Today I woke around 5 and got an early start. I planned to do 24 miles. I left just after Bri and we both got lost at the start of the trail. After that it was easy to navigate. I pulled ahead and walked fast through the cool desert since the sun hadn’t hit it yet. Shortly it did and was immediately warm. The trail went straight up for about 7 miles. It was hot and I was very sluggish. I saw another rattlesnake sitting in a hole off the trail but it didn’t rattle when I walked by. I pushed on to the first water and the last for 18 miles. I breaked and carried 4 liters.
The trail had two small climbs but they were long. The air was cold and there was a breeze that cooled me. We finally were in trees again too which added more shade. I stopped for a break in a random cabin with Bri and Dirty Knucks. We had lunch and hit the trail once again. I was feeling very sluggish but had bursts of energy. I decided to push for the 24 and made it. I drank lots of water, made a quick ramen dinner with a protein cookie, and am now in bed. Doing a Nero to big bear tomorrow.
Forest, you are doing an outstanding job. Take time out to smell the wildflowers while you hike.
Thanks, Gahdnah! I certainly am! Slow pace and long breaks every day! The terrain allows for big days even with those!
